Description

The superb solo catalog of celebrated Istanbul, Turkey-based jazz drummer and former Fulbright Scholarship winner Ferit Odman is gathered here on The Vinyl Collection, a colored 180g 3LP box set featuring his trio of Equinox Music albums Nommo (2010), Autumn in New York (2011) and Dameronia with Strings (2015). The LPs were pressed by Pallas GmbH (Germany) with newly designed matte gate-fold jackets and come housed in a custom black box with OBI and a gold-foil embossed logo on front. Three retro vinyl record coasters (one for each album) are also included.

Ferit Odman recorded his dynamic 2010 solo debut as a leader, Nommo, with the stellar backing of trumpeter Brian Lynch, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, pianist Burak Bedikyan and bassist Peter Washington. The acclaimed Nommo was previously only available on CD and makes its vinyl debut here. Shaun Brady of Downbeat Magazine wrote, "There's an immeasurable gulf between the stage and the studio that many musicians simply can't navigate. Turkish drummer Ferit Odman bridges that divide effortlessly on Nommo, a studio recording that channels enough live-band energy that the absence of post-solo applause comes almost as a shock."

Odman followed on the success of his debut as a leader with Autumn in New York the following year. He once again enlists the talents of the most sought after New York jazz scene musicians including Terman Stafford, Vincent Herring, Anthony Wonsey and Peter Washington. The album offers up a melodic and dynamic repertoire, further establishing Odman as one of jazz's rising stars. Ken Micallef of Downbeat notes that, "Odman's light touch and sizzling energy allow the soloist to project individuality in each song, the drummer acting as kind of a magic genie applying the proper shading and textures for each moment. That they sound like a well-oiled road band only adds to overall beauty and urgency of Autumn in New York."

Odman offered up a sterling tribute to Tadd Dameron on his excellent third effort, 2015's all analog recorded Dameronia With Strings. The remarkably sensitive played session by Odman, Terell Stafford, Peter Washington and Danny Grissett, both as a band and ace soloists, is bolstered by a well-balanced, swinging string sextet and beautiful arrangements by David O'Rourke. Michael Fremer in his - 10/11 Music, 10/11 Sound - Analog Planet review: "This is an album of elegant, melodic tunes filled with great beauty that will make you feel good from the first note of "On a Misty Night" to the second side ender, after which you will wish there was more. Anchored by Odman's smooth, subtle drumming the album also swings dynamically with rhythmic propulsion."
