He was Motown's perfect gentleman, valiant and vulnerable. He was also a divided soul. He gave the world a lantern with What's Going On, but the for the rest of his short life Marvin Gaye struggled with the pressures of stardom and the dark demons of uncertainty. Seeking sanctuary from a debauched lifestyle, Gaye fled to a misty Belgian port where he grappled with the duality of love and lust and created Midnight Love in 1981-1982. With every whispered vocal, every strangled note and each burst of sweat-dripped funk, the healing process had begun. The triple platinum smash became the most successful album of Gaye's career, propelled by the 2x Grammy-winning classic and his final Top 5 hit "Sexual Healing." Midnight Love turned out to be Gaye's swansong as on April 1, 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, he was fatally shot at the family home by his father.
