Born in Rio in 1940, Helio Matheus won a guitar from his father at age 12. After working in sugar mills and as a sales clerk in record stores, he started performing at Rio and Sau Paulo nightclubs. In 1975 he signed to RCA Victor and released his deubt LP, Matheus Segundo Matheus. It features arrangements by Oberdan "Black River" Magalhães, Zé Rodrix and Chiquinho de Moraes, plus the participation of the 128 piece backing band Azymuth. Unfortunately this much deserved reissue didn't make it to press before Helio passed away in 2017, but Athens of the North is extremely proud to do these deep Brazilian grooves justice at long last.
