Soprano giant Gundula Janowitz's transcendental performance of Richard Strauss' Vier Letzte Lieder ("Four Last Songs") recorded between November 1972 and January 1973 at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin. In celebration of her 80th birthday the recording has been mastered from the original sources and pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl with the original jacket and notes. None other than David Bowie once said that it, "aches with love for a life that is quietly fading. I know of no other piece of music, nor any performance, which moves me quite like this." It's joined here by Herbert von Karakajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker's compelling performance of Strauss' tone poem Tod Und Verklärung Op. 24 ("Death and Transfiguration").
