2006's acclaimed Dog House Music is the second album by the Californian ex-hobo Seasick Steve who's played with everyone from John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, the Beach Boys and Joni Mitchell to Son House, R.L. Burnside, Jon Spencer and Modest Mouse. Dog House Music is almost entirely performed by Steve, apart from snare drum on "Yellow Dog" and crash cymbal on "Fallen Off a Rock." Jangling along like a train hurtling down a tunnel into hell, Seasick Steve clearly delights in the lo-fi snarl and twang of the oldest most battered guitar he's picked up in a thrift store. And the impression he leaves on Dog House Music, is that he then just lets that guitar write the song itself in one glorious unpolished take.
