Tenebrous Liar developed as the result of a musical urge felt by photographer Steve Gullick in 2005. Much frantic sound bending and home recording resulted in an album released by Fire Records the following year. It quickly became apparent that Gullick needed a band in order to perform live so he enlisted the help of an eclectic and ever evolving line-up of friends who made a further five albums in as many years and played shows with a very diverse selection of artists including Scout Niblett, Josh T. Pearson, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Foo Fighters, Duke Garwood, Oxbow, Soulsavers, Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy, Ed Harcourt and Cindytalk. In 2016 Tenebrous Liar (Brendan Casey on bass, Ben Edgar on drums and Gullick on guitar/vocals) set about writing and recording their new album in Coventry rehearsal rooms and in Gullick's home. The idea was to record improvisations to create a freer sounding record. The band channeled psychedelic era Miles Davis, early PiL and their love for Neil Young's Dead Man to create The Cut.
