"I started Winter when I was in college in Boston, MA. I've been writing songs since I was 12 years old yet my passion and curiosity for music is in constant evolution. I grew up in Curitiba, Brazil listening to my American father's punk records and my Brazilian mother's MPB. Guitar music and dreamy colorful aesthetics have inspired me greatly along with shoegaze/ambient/dream pop/90's indie rock bands. My ever longing desire to connect with nostalgia and ethereal bliss fueled me to write my second full length record, Ethereality. The songs range from being about my friendships in college ("Alligator"), my lovely pet ("Zoey"), a boyfriend that showed me the world of shoegaze ("Sunshine Devine") and that cathartic feeling of sadness and beauty.
"We ended up being really inspired by Weezer's self-titled and Pinkerton as well as some post-rock, ambient, and shoegaze bands like Starflyer 59 and Explosions In The Sky. We recorded the songs at Comp-ny studios in Glendale, CA where we spent 2 and a half weeks recording with Drew Fisher. It was the most "band" experience I've had in my life. It was a very democratic process where everyone felt free to give an idea or opinion about the production. After we tracked everything, we sent the record to be mixed by long time Winter collaborator Nolan Eley. (I started the project with Nolan Eley recording my songs!). The mixing process was also very collaborative and it took several months to get everything exactly the way we wanted." - Samira Winter
