African Head Charge Off The Beaten Track on LP + Download
After a resurgent 2015, On-U Sound will kick off the new year with vinyl re-presses of the first four African Head Charge albums. All have been re-cut at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin for maximum bass pressure. They also include printed inners with sleeve notes by Steve Barker (On The Wire), and digital download cards for the full album.
Originally released in 1986, Off The Beaten Track still sounds modern, fresh, and forward thinking in the electronica genre. Programmed chants and unexpected sounds (barking dogs, breaking glass, and gypsy violin loops) are salient features of this rhythmic, international dub collection.
Largely made of slinky rhythms from a segmented funk, Off the Beaten Track is both a landmark recording in the use of sound-bite technology and an excellent example of the integration of live instrumentation and programmed music. Features contributions from Jah Wobble (Public Image Limited) and Skip McDonald (Sugarhill Gang, Tackhead).
