Mixing country, blues and acid house, Alabama 3 formed after Rob Spragg and Jake Black met at a party in Peckham, South London. They christened their new band First Presleyterian Church of Elvis The Divine before renaming themselves Alabama 3. They signed to One Little Indian in 1997 and released their debut album Exile On Coldharbour Lane the same year whose track "Woke Up This Morning" became the theme music to the legendary HBO series Sopranos. The dissolute genre-mashing Brixton troupe returned in 2000 with a bigger platform and second studio effort La Peste. No flash in the pan, the band meant business here running the gamut of emotions from euphoria to melancholy and displaying a maturation of their trademark chain gang clarion calls, bittersweet dope laments, sleazy whiskey rhythms, wailing harmonicas and obligatory Delta slide.
