Bathory Blood On Ice on Limited Edition Picture Disc LP
Black Mark is reissuing a selection of the classic catalog from Swedish black metal legends Bathory on limited edition picture disc vinyl. Titles include: Bathory (1984), Hammerheart (1990), Requiem (1994), Octagon (1995), Blood On Ice (1996), Destroyer Of Worlds (2001), Nordland I (2002) and Nordland II (2003). Compilation album Jubileum Vol. I (1992) will also be issued on double vinyl.
The many ideas explored as far as sounds and styles were concerned on Blood On Ice - certainly once the hellish paced material and occult topics had been dropped - resulted in a myriad of sessions over the years (February 1988, October 1988, June 1989 and June 1995). During several of these sessions, material was experimented with which dealt in one form or another with a theme based on a story by Quorthon entitled Blood on Ice.
This story was loosely based on the ancient Germanic Siegfried-saga, which also inspired such masterpieces as the Nibelungen Ring by Richard Wagner. The band wasn't sure exactly how the fans would position themselves towards a concept album, particularly with the split up of the fan base into two camps - a Death metal camp and a Viking metal camp.
However, rumors of the album's existence spread among fans and the demand for its release was aired through endless flows of fan mail. The whole story behind the album, why it was never completed and how it was eventually brought back to life using modern studio technology, was eventually explained in the album's 1996 liner notes.
Tracks such as "Man of Iron" and "Gods of Thunder of Wind and of Rain" stand out in a blizzard of numbers soaked in Scandinavian magic and frozen blood. Odin would have been a fan!
