Bill Withers +Justments on Limited Edition 180g LP
Bill Withers created mellow, down home-style soul for barely more than a decade before retreating from the industry altogether. Yet over the course of the handful of albums he made for Sussex and CBS, the Appalachian native struck lasting emotional chords with now-standard tracks such as "Lean on Me," "Use Me," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Just the Two of Us" and "Lovely Day."
Withers' third album, +Justments was released in 1974, the heyday of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's unique soul croon. After his wildly successful studio albums Just As I Am and Still Bill, and the impressive live album Live At Carnegie Hall, Withers got to pick his own band to back him up. He chose members of Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, a group that rose to fame in the funk scene in the early-70s, and frame his material here wonderfully.
"Life like most precious gifts gives us the responsibility of upkeep. We are given the responsibility of arranging our own spaces to best benefit our survival. We have the choice of believing or not believing in things like God, friendship, marriage, love, lust or any number of simple but complicated things. We will make some mistakes both in judgement and in fact. We will help some situations and hurt some situations. We will help some people and hurt some people and be left to live with it either way. We must then make some adjustments, or as the old people back home would call them, +Justments." - Bill Withers
