Breathless Green To Blue on 2LP
In 2012, after a near decade hiatus, London-based quartet Breathless returned with another eleven bittersweet songs of love and loss that harkened back to their classic LPs, with layered vocals, echoed guitars, rumbling drums, traces of Sid Barrett's Pink Floyd, fragments of Brian Eno, Joy Division and early 4AD.
Green To Blue is Breathless' melancholic masterpiece, their Only The Lonely or Pink Moon, exquisitely sad and sweetly maudlin. Features backing vocals from This Mortal Coil contributor Heidi Berry, and additional guidance from Ivo Watts-Russell. This isn't simply jammed-out space-rock or post-rock frontierism for its own sake; the music of Breathless, even at its most wordless and abstract, is still powerfully emotive, ever grounded, so often moving.
"We are weirdly sensitive people, all of us," says singer/keyboardist Dominic Appleton. "It's just what we're like, and that's why the Breathless sound is always there – it's a melancholy thing that runs through everything we do."
