Chet Baker Chet Baker And Strings on Limited Edition 180g LP
A celebrated improviser who played with everyone from Charlie Parker to Stan Getz, esteemed West Coast trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker helped establish the lithe swing associated with the mid-'50s sound of West Coast cool. His charisma was unmistakable – he brought an unmistakable charm to any tune he addressed. With a lilt in his voice and a casual sense of rhythm, his influence made a mark on many musicians and many genres.
Originally released in 1953, Chet Baker & Strings finds a young Chet in a fine quintet setting that includes Russ Freeman (piano), Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone), Bud Shank (alto saxophone), Joe Mondragon (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums). The proceedings are then flushed out beautifully here by a nine-piece string section with various airy and apropos arrangements from Johnny Mandel, Marty Paich, Shorty Rogers and Jack Montrose.
