Emerson String Quartet - Mstislav Rostropovich - Schubert: String Quintet In C Major, D.956 on 180g LP + Download
The Emerson String Quartet - named after American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson - has recorded over thirty acclaimed recordings with Deutsche Grammophon since 1987, eight of which have won Grammy Awards - including two for Best Classical Album - an unprecedented honor for a chamber music group. After more than 32 years of extensive touring and recording, the Emerson Quartet continues to perform with the same benchmark integrity, energy and commitment that it has demonstrated since it was formed in 1976.
In 1990, the Emerson String Quartet joined forces with celebrated cellist Mstislav Rostropovich for a first-rate performance of Franz Schubert's chamber work masterpiece, String Quintet In C Major, D.956. The recording, one of the Quartet's finest, was then issued to acclaim on Deutsche Grammophon in 1992.
"Unlike his late string quartets, which depict a uniformly bleak landscape, Schubert's great string quintet celebrates life to the fullest. The addition of the extra cello to the usual string quartet allows Schubert to give the cello some of the most exquisite melodic lines ever written. The quintet is full of captivating melodies and surprising harmonic twists, and even though it is nearly an hour long it still feels too short. Mstislav Rostropovich and the Emerson String Quartet give an intensely passionate performance." - Classical Guide
