This 1961 Prestige label release from Gene Ammons finds the tenor great in his absolute prime on a set of ballad friendly standards with accompaniment from Richard Wyands (piano), Doug Watkins (bass) and J.C. Heard (drums). As its title suggests, a particular cool mood pervades each of the performances here amidst tight, structured arrangements and sympathetic interplay. Among the many highlights is a graceful rendering of The Music Man's "Til There Was You" where Ammons absolutely shines!
