In the 1970s, Grand Funk Railroad was the pinnacle of American rock 'n' roll, selling out arenas of ecstatic fans all over the U.S. and beyond. This no-nonsense band from Flint, Michigan defined the sound of early working class hard rock groups with their over-the-top sound, Mark Farner's heavy riffing, Mel Schacher's hard-hitting bass lines and Don Brewer's intricately funky drums. Third album, Closer To Home, solidified Grand Funk's ascension to the top of the rock world alongside heavyweights like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Speak to just about any Vietnam vet and they will tell you that "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" was their anthem during their lonely tour of duty and Closer To Home became the band's third record in 1970 alone to be certified Gold.
