Hanne Kolstø rotates like a waterspout. Every year she sweeps past us with things she's picked up and put down on record, so that we get the feeling that we're standing completely still while she's going in slow circles. In 2015, Kolstø released While We Still Have Light, her fifth album in only five years time.
"While We Still Have Light mirrors the goodbye theme, which can be interpreted in many different ways," she explains. "In the middle of this is doubt; the doubt before a decision, the doubt before you choose to break out of bad patterns, the doubt before you choose to leave a friend or a boyfriend, before you choose to enter a darkness, in the hope that maybe there's more light on the other side."
Produced by frequent collaborator Øyvind Røsrud Gundersen and featuring string arrangements by Eivind Buene, While We Still Have Light finds Kolstø continuing to pour out her seemingly inexhaustible cornucopia of good melodies, personal lyrics and musical distinctiveness with aplomb and stunning results.
