Igor Stravinsky - Le Sacre Du Printemps - Columbia Symphony Orchestra on 180g Import LP
While he was finishing the score of The Firebird, the idea came to Igor Stravinsky for a pagan, ritual scenario ie Le Sacre Du Printemps (The Rite of Spring). Stravinsky carries the aggressive, hammering rhythms to the extreme, casting them in atonal harmonies which feed on the alternation between a "red-hot and a mild mixture," as the composer put it. On this excellent 1960 recording he also serves as conductor leading the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in a thrilling performance of his trailblazing work.
