1961's aptly named The Wonderful World Of Jazz finds pianist/leader John Lewis working outside of his day job with the Modern Jazz Quartet and showcasing his ivory skills in multiple configurations including a swinging quartet with guitarist Jim Hall, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Connie Kay plus larger groups augmented by saxophonists Eric Dolphy, James Rivers, Benny Golson and Paul Gonsalves and trumpeter Herb Pomeroy. A 15-minute plus reading of "Body and Soul" and elegant renditions of "Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West" and "Afternoon In Paris" absolutely steal the show!
