Psychedelic legends July are now seen as one of the most inspirational and important British bands of the '60s. Looking back, originally there were two Bands from Ealing, The Second Thoughts (which included Jon Field and Tony Duhig) and The Tomcats who were, Pete Cook, Tom Newman, Alan James and Chris Jackson. The Tomcats, who played at the famous Ealing Jazz Club were managed by Alexis Korner and were regulars at London's Beat City in Oxford Street. When, in 1965 the two bands split, Tom, Tony, Chris, Alan and Jon went to Spain for a year under the name of Los Tomcats, playing mainly R&B standards mixed with a few of their own. They released 4 EP's which made the Top Ten, before returning to the UK in 1966.

Back in England Pete Cook and Tom Newman reconnected, and began a prolific song-writing spree, experimenting with different effects and instruments, including Sitar. The sound was mind-blowingly weird and mystical. From the chrysalis of R&B emerged the butterfly of psychedelia. With the new sound came a new name, July, the band became a well-established ‘underground' band playing groovy London clubs like The Middle Earth, The Roundhouse, The Marquee, 100 club and the first ever rock charity concert at The Albert Hall. They were signed by the Major Minor label, and in 1968 cut the magical July album in one weekend. Major Minor folded and shortly afterwards the band quit and went their separate ways.

The years passed, and unbeknownst to our heroes, their album quietly became the 'Pied Piper' we now find it, slowly gathering together the psychedelic consciousness of the whole galaxy. Tomcats Spanish EPs and the July album had begun changing hands for as much as $2000 and their songs were found on play-lists for both main-stream and independent radio stations, in the UK, US, South America, Spain, Japan and Europe. July's long awaited second album, titled Resurrection, was 40+ years in the making and was issued in 2013.
