Last Heat is a gang of unbelievably skilled musicians with great experience from collaborations with a number of significant bands and artists in Norway – El Cuero, Hanne Hukkelberg, Shining, Stein Torleif Bjella, Huntsville, Odd Nordstoga and Trondheim Jazzorkester, to name a few. Their eponymous 2012 debut consists of eight strong originals which mix country, rock and soul with beautiful harmonies and enticing arrangements. When listening to Last Heat, bands like The Band, Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and Jackson Browne all easily come to mind. Their lyrics largely deal in fear, angst, unrequited love and existential confusion whilst being positive in a quirky and crafty kind of way.
The band's vocalist and guitarist, Øystein Frantzvåg, is the prime mover in the band and main songwriter. He explains, "With one exception, all these songs were written during or fairly close to a long period where I was ill. They appeared at a time when most other things in my life were turned upside down, came to a complete stop or simply disappeared from me. This came as a huge surprise to me – I'd never written music or sung before. Despite having worked as a professional musician for a number of years, I'd not exactly been the creative type. But now, it seemed like I had opened a jar full of stuff. The good thing is that it hasn't stopped. New things keep coming to me every day."
