Lee Ranaldo And The Dust Acoustic Dust on Import LP
Lee Ranaldo certainly needs no introduction: founding member of Sonic Youth and collaborator of artists like Glenn Branca and William Hooker, he is considered one of the best guitarists of the last 30 years. After Sonic Youth ceased operation indefinitely, Ranaldo started a new adventure with The Dust, releasing two critically acclaimed albums on Matador Records and touring the world over.
Acoustic Dust tries to reflect the most delicate side of this project. The band often plays acoustic sets during their tours, so it seemed like a good idea to record an album without the electric side of The Dust. The result is a great album of Ranaldo's compositions together with some cover songs ("Revolution Blues” by Neil Young, “Bushes and Briars” by Sandy Denny and “You Just May Be The One” by The Monkees). The 11-track effort was recorded last year in Barcelona during some free dates in the middle of a European tour, with the help of the Catalan musician Refree.
"We hooked up with Raül Fernandez Refree, our engineer for the sessions. Raul was great in the studio and we all immediately became fast friends. Another friend from Portugal, João Paulo Feliciano was also in Barcelona at the time, and we invited him in to add some Hammond Organ. In four or five days we tracked 14 or 15 songs, choosing some from my album Between The Times And The Tides, plus a few from the record we were still working on at the time, Last Night On Earth, and some cover songs too. After the sessions we hit the road again with our electric instruments to finish our tour, and slowly over the following months plans were made for Raul to mix the music for release. You hold in your hands the fruits of those acoustic days in Barcelona." - Lee Ranaldo
