Manfred Mann's Earth Band Mann Alive on 180g 2LP
Manfred Mann rode the mid-60s British Invasion wave into the American charts with sublime pop hits like "Do Wah Diddy," "Sha La La" and "Pretty Flamingo." But this overtly commercial exterior masked a band of seriously versatile musicians equally adept at playing blues, jazz, soul, pop and any number of hybrids thereof. They were also a hell of a live band as 1998's Mann Alive certainly attests. Recorded at various venues on the group's Soft Vengeance Tour in 1996-1997, the 14-track affair includes highly stylized takes on Bob Dylan ("Shelter from the Storm," "The Times They Are A-Changin," "Mighty Quinn," "You Angel You"), Bruce Springsteen ("Blinded by the Light," "For You") and Bob Marley ("Redemption Song") among others.
