Netherlands Audubon on LP
Netherlands was formed in New York City in 2010 by multi-instrumentalist Timo Ellis. He often mentions Pixeltan, Flipper and Wipers as being the musical "spiritual precedents" here, along with the deeper/ambient influences of Bad Brains, Diamanda Galas, Melvins, Can and The Cars. The band, with Zach Eichenhorn on drums and Ava Farber on synthbass, was created to express Elli' heavier inclinations.
With two self-releases, Fantasmatic (2010) and Silicon Vapor (2012), Netherlands gigged throughout New York, supporting bands as diverse as Melt Banana, Mutoid Man and the Giraffes. Their incendiary live shows have an intensity that simultaneously recalls the brutality of hardcore along with the palpably foreboding atmosphere reminiscent of the early proto-metal greats. Noisey described the band as "ushering in a new wave of metal pop" while CMJ called them "super fuzzed stoner rock"; both accurate characterizations of an increasingly three dimensional writing style and body of work.
Their new record for Los Angeles based Prosthetic Records, Audubon was recorded by Tom Tierney of Spaceman Sound. It's a moody, noisy, sludgy juggernaut, combining murderous riffs and infectious hooks. The musical greats are always leaders, not followers. Netherlands here prove to be the front-runner of the NYC arts and music scene, one about to spread worldwide.
