Shostakovich - Ravel - Piano Concertos - Bernstein on 180g LP
Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the Original Analog Tapes
One of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century, Leonard Bernstein was a great interpreter of music from that era. Greatly moved by the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, he was one of the Soviet master's greatest champions. Shostakovich's 2nd Piano Concerto is often referred to by its fiery and youthful character, making it a perfect fit for the passionate and capricious conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
Similarities to Bernstein's seminal playing and conducting work with Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" are inevitable, particularly on listening to this LP with its accompanying performance of Ravel's lyrical Piano Concerto in G Major. On one, beautifully mastered and rendered LP you get two of Bernstein's most famous, most combustible performances - an excellent addition to your collection of 20th century masters from both sides of the baton.
"Even though Columbia was never known as a sound label, particularly compared to RCA, Mercury in America and British Decca and EMI in England, it did produce its share of sonically superb recordings and this is one of them...There's more space on the Shostakovich, but both have glorious harmonics and impressive dynamics. Good reissue choice Impex!" - Michael Fremer, themusicangle.com, Decemeber 2011
