Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks Real Emotional Trash on 2LP
Fourth Solo Album from the Pavement Frontman!
Through a handful of solo albums and his prior role as the pen and voice behind the vast majority of the Pavement ouevre, Stephen Malkmus long ago staked his claim as one of the most fertile minds in American music. However, Malkmus had never made a record that covered nearly as much stylistic ground as 2008's Real Emotional Trash, his fourth "solo" effort (this one credited with The Jicks, like his second, Pig Lib), and the result is a decidedly low-down and heavy record that packs a hell of an emotional punch. "Cold Son," "Out of Reaches" and "We Can't Help You" are amongst the most gorgeous, contemplative songs Malkmus has ever recorded, but true to form there's no shortage of dark humor or virtuoso guitar work here either. Monster drummer Janet Weiss, bassist Joanna Bolme and guitar/keyboardist Mike Clark also set the table nicely for Malkmus and his guitar to be on full display throughout.
