Steve Earle Townes on 180-gram Double Vinyl LP
Mastered by Kevin Gray and Pressed at RTI!
Steve Earle's Townes is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award-winning Washington Square Serenade. The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle's friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt.
Songs selected for Townes were those that meant the most to Earle, as well as the ones to which he felt personally connected. Some are tunes that Earle has played his entire career ("Pancho and Lefty," "Lungs," "White Freightliner Blues"). He learned "(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria" directly from Van Zandt and specifically taught himself "Marie and Rake" to include here. Earle recorded his New York sessions solo and added other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt's original solo performances to the best of his recollection. "Lungs" was produced and mixed by the Dust Brothers' John King and features Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on electric guitar.
And it's best heard on LP, which was handled by Kevin Gray at RTI.
"True to the honoree’s storytelling brilliance, Earle infuses the material with narrative conviction and colorful personality. The record alternates between slow and midtempo numbers, achieving a literary rhythm that helps lure listeners into the painful worlds of cowboy outlaws, broken lovers, and hopeful drifters. Sonically, this is a primarily minimalist affair on which finger-picked notes, scraped strings, and shuffling chords resonate with raw grit and unvarnished emotion." -Bob Gendron, TONE Audio, May 2009
