The Beatles Beatles for Sale on 180g Mono LP

Audiophiles Get Their Wish: Beatles for Sale Cut from the Original 1/4-Inch Analog Master Tapes and Pressed at Optimal on a Dead-Quiet LP

NO DIGITAL USED IN MASTERING CHAIN: Working at Abbey Road, Engineers Magee and Berkowitz Used Same Techniques Employed in 1960s for All-Analog Project

This Extraordinary Mono Pressing is the Definitive Analog Version of This Legendary Album

Beatles remastering engineers saved the best for last. Cut from the original 1/4-inch analog master tapes and pressed at Optimal in Germany on a dead-quiet 180g LP, the Beatles' Beatles for Sale is made by and for audiophiles. More collectable than its stereo and digital processors, and featuring utterly transparent-to-the-source sound, it is completely different than its stereo analog counterpart by way of the all-analog cutting process and audiophile-focused manufacturing. Purists rejoice: NO DIGITAL is involved in any part of the chain. This pressing presents the band as it was meant to be heard, in spectacular mono sound.

Mastered from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and Grammy-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz, Beatles for Sale exemplifies sonic transparency and analog purity.  While the recent stereo LP and CDs were created from digital remasters, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records for the Beatles for Sale mono LP employing the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of the Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

The last Beatles record to feature traces of the band’s early rock and roll influences, Beatles for Sale also functions as a harbinger of what was to come, as John Lennon’s songwriting reflects his embrace of Bob Dylan’s folk rock. There’s also a distinctive change in moods. The record opens with a trio of darker-flavored material, “No Reply,” “I’m a Loser,” and “Baby’s In Black” much more despairing than anything the quartet had previously attempted.

Recorded only four months after A Hard Day’s Night, this iconic album  involves much of the same repeat echo techniques yet also adds a few new wrinkles. “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby” and “Rock and Roll Music” are enhanced with extra slap-back echo to pay homage to band’s early influences. This analog pressing opens up the previous veil, allowing the effects to be more prevalent and detailed than ever before.

In addition, there’s a more solid drum foundation, thanks to Ringo’s acquisition of a larger 22-inch Ludwig kick drum. Again, this definitive LP pressing brings the instrumentation to the fore in a way never imaginable. Same goes for the myriad percussive accents and the nylon-string Jose Ramirez acoustic guitar that appears on several tracks. Combined with the move toward songwriting that addresses weariness and bleakness, shifts that balance the go-for-all romp of covers such as “Kansas City/Hey! Hey! Hey!,” the Beatles turned in what was then their most diverse—and unexpected—record to date.
