Alan Parker's BAFTA Award-winning 1991 film The Commitments is an adaption of Roddy Doyle's 1987 novel of the same name and tells the story of working class Dubliners who form a soul group in the tradition of '60s artists like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. The cast was comprised of mostly unknown Irish actors chosen more for their musical talent rather than acting ability including Glen Hansard (The Frames, The Swell Season, Once) and the soundtrack features performances from the cast and singer Niamh Kavanagh of material made famous by Al Green, Ann Peebles, Franklin, Redding and Pickett. The Commitments performance of "Mustang Sally" opens the soundtrack and was released as the single.
