In 2002 The Dillinger Escape Plan was without a vocalist and began a nationwide search for a new frontman. During that search, Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle vocalist) agreed to help the band produce an EP and handled vocal duties. The group released this lighting in a bottle EP via Epitaph Records, titled Irony Is a Dead Scene. The recording features guitarist Ben Weinman, drummer Chris Pennie, guitarist Brian Benoit, bassist Liam Wilson, and Patton on vocals, with ex-bassist Adam Doll assisting with keyboards and sample effects. The extremely rare EP contains three original songs and a cover of the Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy."
