The English Beat Wha'ppen? on Limited Edition 180g Import LP
In the early 1980s, many bands began borrowing styles initially made popular in other regions of the world, spicing their own sound up with exotic textures and foreign rhythms. Few groups perfected the mix-and-match hybrid with more everlasting appeal and contagious melodicism than the multi-cultural ensemble The English Beat.
The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. Along with their contemporaries The Specials, The Selecter and Madness, the band became an overnight sensation and one of the most popular and influential bands of the British 2-Tone ska movement.
1981's Wha'ppen? is the English Beat's second album and direct follow-up to their breakout 1980 debut I Just Can't Stop It. Once again enlisting the talents of producer by Bob Sargeant, the exotic and energetic 12-track set expedited the band's ascent to the top of the 2-Tone ska scene and is home to the trio of hits "Doors of Your Heart," "All Out to Get You" and "Drowning."
