Stylistically and thematically, The Upsides is the record that finds the quintet truly coming into their own, jamming a stake atop the crowded heap of pretenders and more importantly, asserting that a lasting impression isn't dependent on insane hardcore breakdowns or celebrating misery and misogyny.
Deconstruct all the elements that make The Upsides such a terrific pop punk record: it's got the sincere vocals, the fist-pumping sing-along choruses, the soaring, buzz-saw guitars and kinetic riffs, not to mention a rhythm section with some formidable muscle behind it.
Still, it's the ebb and flow of the album and the way all the individual pieces are perfectly woven together that will turn people on their ears. There are no crazy mosh parts haphazardly shoehorned where they don't belong, nor are there random screaming bits that do nothing except remind us how completely awkward shriek-singing can be. In fact, The Wonder Years seems to be taking almost as much from pop music as it does from punk and hardcore. Considering how accomplished and catchy these songs sound, coupled with how simultaneously urgent and ferocious they can be, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Most strikingly, The Upsides sheds pop punk's common mores in favor of a message of hope and positivity - that maybe it's not okay to feel defeated and downtrodden just because the world expects it from you.
