Yeyey The Vision on 2LP
Ben Shepard aka Yeyey's latest effort is an exercise in contrast, spanning territories alien and natural, both stark and verdant. Assembled in Brooklyn and San Francisco, the record's lush instrumentation surrounds an elegiac cast of supporting vocalists, contributed by members of M83, Farallons, and Gregor Samsa. Mercury Rev's Jeff Mercel provides drums, with Juilliard master violinist Sarah Koenig-Plonskier comprising the overdubbed string section. A colorful collage of texture and shape, The Vision is intricate, woven together like a melodic tapestry. The songs evolve over time, revealing new rooms with meticulous landscapes.
Shepard formed Yeyey in the wake of the dissolution of his previous band Uzi & Ari, in 2013. Frequent collaborations with Boston-based electronic outfit Arms and Sleepers for two albums and several marathon European tours contributed to the seven year gap since Shepard's last full length, Headworms was released, in 2008 under the Uzi & Ari moniker. In 2010, Shepard left his mountain home in Salt Lake City and settled into a riverside apartment in Brooklyn, New York to write and record his latest collection of songs which find him experimenting with a dozen instruments, and developing a new vocal approach to drape over his densely layered, post-rock styled pop arrangements.
