John Coltrane The Paris Concert on LP

In his odyssey to realize the music evolving in his head with a rapidity astonishing even in jazz, John Coltrane in 1961 settled on a combination of musicians to accompany him on his explorations. In this broadcast of a concert in Paris, probably in early 1962, the "classic" Coltrane quartet is heard not long after it was formed. On tenor saxophone and his newly adopted soprano, Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones are already locked into the intensity, energy, and daring that was to characterize their music for four years and make them one of the most influential bands in the history of American music. The importance to Coltrane of the polyrhythms and power of Jones's drumming cannot be overemphasized. From the evidence of this recording, it is clear that the electricity between them was flowing at full force from the beginning.

Musicians:
John Coltrane (tenor saxophone)
McCoy Tyner (piano)
