Worth the Wait: The Involved Process of Handcrafting Wood Headphones
Choosing wood for headphones makes for an inherently difficult process. For starters, obtaining the desired qualities for wooden parts is both long and hard. Then, the rich colors of walnut require the use of air drying, an extended and expensive process. Steam or kiln drying are cheaper techniques, but the colors tend to get washed out and the approach begets structural risks. So Meze elects to do wood the right way: Waiting 18 months for the wood to dry, a timeframe needed for curing and drying the lumber before any further processing can begin. After that, shaping just a single pair of earcups takes up to eight hours. Sanding, lacquering, and finishing lasts 45 days. No corners get cut. And because craftsmanship remains paramount, each wooden component is carefully inspected.

"The Meze 99 Classics are handsomely designed headphones that deliver an exciting audio experience."
