Death For The Whole World To See on LP

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music - and band name - too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album.

The group was brought back into public consciousness when they became the subject of the 2012 documentary film, A Band Called Death - equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story - which chronicled the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

Classic proto-punk from 1970s Detroit, raw with little polish, For The Whole World To See showcases the organic power relationships within the trio of brothers. The Hackney’s were first influenced by soul and funk music but it all changed when they saw Iggy and the Stooges. Featuring socially conscious lyrics mixed with a sky-cracking combination of guitar and vocals, all recorded in raw fashion, Death finally sees their first full length release, remastered and ready for the world to hear courtesy of Drag City Records.

"The first time the stereo played "Politicians in My Eyes," I couldn't believe what I was hearing. When I was told the history of the band and what year they recorded this music, it just didn't make sense. Ahead of punk, and ahead of their time." - Jack White

"These dudes were pre-Sex Pistols, pre-Bad Brains, pre-all that shit, and nobody knows about them. I don't understand how the world could forget them." - Mos Def
