In 1984, Gary Numan set up his own label, Numa Records, after parting ways with his previous label, Beggars Banquet. The move signified the beginning of a new period in his career, where he was free to experiment and take his sound in a new direction. The first album to be released via Numa was Berserker, which represented a shift toward a harder-edged digital aesthetic, while still honoring the analog textures of his earlier work.
