Full Details

James Brown's music changed constantly, spontaneously, according to mood and circumstance. Some songs he recorded several times and some themes he re-interpreted many times. Songs he performed live seldom kept the same arrangement for long. In The Jungle Groove (1986) collected the jams then making the sampled and DJ round, while the vault inspired Motherlode (1988) excavated those gems left behind. A treasure trove spanning J.B.'s soul-to-funk of 1967 to 1973, Motherlode gathered then-unreleased recordings of "There It Is" (live at the Appollo 1972), "She's The One" (a U.K. vault find), his male take on "He's The One," the Bobby Byrd duet "Since You Been Gone," "Mother Popcorn" alternate "You Got To Have A Mother For Me" and a live version of "Say It Loud-I'm Black And I'm Proud." Along with extended remixes of "People Get Up And Drive Your Funky Soul" and "I Got Ants In My Pants (And I Want To Dance)," Motherlode also revealed two nasty instrumentals, "Funk Bomb" and the other untitled as well as a pair of exploratory vamps, "Baby Here I Come" and "Can I Get Some Help."
