When eminent jazz practitioners with shared histories convene in the studio without rehearsal or preparatory gigs, a perfunctory, by-the-numbers session is often the outcome. That is decidedly not the case on Solid Jackson.

Solid Jackson, issued by the legendary Criss Cross label under the group name of M.T.B., puts together again in the studio thirty years later four of the five musicians who recorded the well-wrought 1994 Criss Cross album Consenting Adults. Those players are none other than pianist Brad Mehldau, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, guitarist Peter Bernstein, with Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart rounding out the quintet.

This is an intense, focused recital that reinforces the exalted position each member holds in the jazz landscape. Everyone listens. No one overplays or goes for “house.” Recorded in November 2023 with sound engineer Mike Marciano at the Samurai Hotel Recording Studio, NYC. Available on 180g virgin vinyl in gatefold jacket.
