Nat King Cole Just One of Those Things on 180g 45RPM 2LP: Mastered from the Original 3-Track Analog Master Tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman, Includes Six-Panel Booklet
Contrasting downbeat ballads with an ironic brassy, upbeat big-band attitude, the brilliant and expressive work of vocalist Nat King Cole and arranger Billy May on display here is one for the ages. 1957's Just One Of Those Things is a classic collection that perfectly captures the inherent experience of love and disillusionment.
On par with Frank Sinatra's period albums, the set swings effortlessly and lightly, as Cole brings a fine, unhurried touch to uptempo standards and jazz-based pop material. Featuring top shelf interpretations of "These Foolish Things," "Who's Sorry Now?" "The Party's Over" and more, this album is among its era's finest recordings of popular music, replete with a quality, style and spirit that remain touchstones for any vocal pop outing. What's more, a superb track recorded for the album, "You'll Never Know," which was originally omitted due to space constraints, is included as a bonus track on this pressing.
Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray from the original three-track analog tapes at Acoustech, complete with an all-analog system comprised of custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, and a specially installed console and monitoring chain, this 2LP set sounds fantastic. A striking six-panel booklet complete with rare photos, 2,200-word essay by Jordan Taylor on the album, and a 1,200-word essay by Michael Fremer about the remastering process round out the stellar package.
