Dual-Mono Preamplifier Offers Choice Between Class A Mode and Discrete Mode, Features Nine Inputs: Advance Paris X-P700 Also Has Burr-Brown DAC, Copious Outputs, Outstanding Specs

Advance Paris isn't shy about its aim for the X-P700 preamplifier. The French-engineered unit strives to offer features, construction, and performance at a cost that its competition cannot match. Suffice it to say this solidly built and comically astute component deserves to be in the conversation of the finer preamplifiers available anywhere near its price bracket.

A dual-mono design with Advance Paris' Direct Path signal processing, X-P700 offers the choice between two output schematics: Class A mode, using bipolars in a double cascade circuit, close to a tube gradient; and Discrete Mode, based on a JFet differential and current mirror in the bipolars, polarized in the more traditional Class AB. Also inside: Two high-capacity toroidal transformers that feed the double-mono filtered and regulated power supply on the motherboard, which contains the preamplification stages. And a Burr-Brown 1796 DAC for excellent processing and clarity.

When it comes to flexibility, X-P700 sits at the head of its class. Start with nine analog inputs, which include one balanced pair and an MM/MC phonostage. Speaking of the latter: The quality of the adjustable MC high- and low-level options is truly remarkable for a product at this level. On the digital side, you'll get two optical inputs, one coaxial input, one USB-B (Xmos), and one USB-A. For outputs, you can count on two pairs of RCA with one pair of balanced XLR, along with a high-pass output and two subwoofer outputs. Got headphones? X-P700 has 6.35mm and 3.5mm inputs on the front panel and a double independent input below, with gain settings of +6, 0 or -4 dB and output impedance of 0 or 100 ohms.

The measured specs of X-P700 underline the warmth, finesse, and dynamics with which it helps convey the music you love. Total distortion of less than 0.01 percent, a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 110dB, and more than 100dB of channel separation ensure you hear the details and accuracy you want. Plus, the stylishness and robustness you deserve. A 10mm black methacrylate front panel, four support feet, and a clean front panel distinguished by a centered rotary knob convey that X-P700 means business.
