Excellence, Distilled: U.S.A.-Built Pass Labs XP-12 Linestage Preamplifier Features Dual-Mono Architecture, Wide Dynamic Range, Tonal Purity, and Impeccable Construction

Pass Labs’ XP-12 linestage preamplifier incorporates core technology from the company’s XP-22 preamplifiers into a less complex, more affordable unit that delivers true dual mono operation in a single chassis. And like all Pass Labs products, XP-22 is custom-built for you in its California facility — meaning, construction occurs once you place an order. And while other manufacturers might not have an eight-to-10 week wait time, they also don’t have Pass Labs’ attitude toward common off-the-shelf designs.

All the hallmarks of the flagship Pass preamplifiers are here. The dual-mono architecture utilizes high-quality Toshiba transistors and a single-stage volume control derived from the XS Pre. It’s a great way to enter the world of Pass Labs at an approachable price point. Think of XP-12 as a smaller slice of the Pass pie. It adheres to all of the core Pass Labs principles: low noise, tonal purity, wide dynamic range, and generational build quality.

As you might imagine, XP-12 does justice to any great power amplifier. Around back, it features a set of RCA outputs and a set of balanced XLR outputs. Two sets of balanced XLR inputs and three additional RCA inputs provide the connectivity you need, along with a 12V remote turn-on jack should you require it.

A high-bias output stage makes it easy for XP-12 to drive long cable runs (XLR or RCA) with ease: a benefit for listeners who want to place power amplifiers close to their speakers. It also contributes to the nearly total absence of noise, adding to the dynamic capability of XP-12.

In front, the anodized panel matches the Pass Labs aesthetic. All the controls are organized in a simple, effective, and logical manner. The center blue display is easily readable from across the room or can be turned off via the supplied aluminum remote. Really, if you love music, there’s never been a better time to step up to a Pass Labs preamplifier.

Reviewers and consumers the world over agree on the excellence of XP-12. If you have further questions, any of the Music Direct team members can help you decide. Call us with any needs at 312-433-0200.

“The XP-12 line-level preamp forgoes dual-chassis extravagance but sonically you wouldn’t know it. Music abounds with stunning orchestral layering and complex three-dimensional soundspace vistas.”
— The Absolute Sound, Editors' Choice Award

"Borrowing several areas of design and circuitry from the multi-chassis, top-to-the-line Pass Lab XS line stage preamplifier, the XP-12 is the ultimate expression of trickle-down technology.”
— Future Audiophile

"It doesn’t have the EQ, sliders, or the myriad mixing features of the X32 but, nevertheless, it remains a powerful tool, equally useful for evaluating audio equipment, software, and accessories—or—for delivering an exquisite heavenly aural experience.”
— Positive Feedback
