Baden Powell's Poema on Guitar on (AAA) 180g LP from MPS Records.

Poema on Guitar captures Brazilian maestro Baden Powell at a moment of profound artistic focus. Recorded in Villingen, Germany following his celebrated appearance at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1967, the album was produced by his close collaborator Joachim E. Berendt. Far from a mere display of technical prowess, the record unfolds as a deeply poetic meditation on rhythm and melody.

Dedicated to Vinicius de Moraes, Brazil’s revered poet, diplomat and lyricist of countless songs, the record pays homage to the emotional depth of Brazilian music. As Powell himself suggests, “Only he who has read Vinicius knows the meaning of saudade.” That longing – so central to Brazil’s musical soul – resonates throughout the album.

Poema on Guitar blends the sensuality of Bossa Nova, the rhythmic intensity of Samba, and the melodic qualities of European Baroque. The tracklist, featuring both trio and quartet arrangements and as well as intimate solo guitar pieces, includes Powell’s own compositions alongside interpretations of Jazz standards, each rendered with breathtaking technique and rhythmic finesse. Pieces like "Feitinha Pro Poeta" and "Tristeza e Solidao" evoke the introspective beauty of Powell’s melodic language, while "Consolacao" and "Samba Triste" channel the spiritual urgency of Afro-Brazilian tradition. Powell’s collaborators – bassist Eberhard Weber, flutist Sidney Smith, and drummer Charly Antolini – provide a subtle yet dynamic framework that allows each composition to breathe and unfold naturally.
