Six decades ago, the West Coast Jazz community was truly turning out some incredible recordings thanks to multi-instrumentalists like Jack Wilson (piano/organ). He had already been cutting some wonderful sessions and gigs with Nancy Wilson, Roland Kirk and Dinah Washington. While solidifying his reputation as a young lion into the ever growing jazz music market, he was soon discovered by more greats like Jimmy Smith and Sarah Vaughn.

After a stint in the armed services, he put together a group of great musicians and delivered his solo debut, 1963’s The Jazz Organs, which would soon become one the first jazz crossover projects that would gain acceptance not just with jazz connoisseurs, but with a hip record buying audience. Much like Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock and Jimmy Smith were all enjoying at this time.

The ingredients were all here for a recipe that would make The Jazz Organs one of the more incredible albums of his early career. The opening track “My Favorite Things” features the great organ battle between Jack Wilson and Henry Cain. Both musicians play off of each other’s hooks and then the party begins.

Stellar covers of Rudolph Toombes “One Mint Julep” and Dizzy Gillespie’s “Blues N Boogie” made the album a much welcomed gift to the ears of jazz radio programmers as the LP began to receive acclaim in the music world.

Henry Cain contributes a wonderful tune “Cain’s Abel” as well as the great Leroy Vinegar who also shines amongst this jazz collective with his classic “For Carl.”

Friday Music is offering on vinyl for the first time in 6 decades The Jazz Organs. Mastered by Joe Reagoso from the Vault Records & 43 North Broadway recordings, pressed on colored vinyl.

This album will also be featured in the original 1963 artwork presentation by the legendary Woody Woodward, as well as featuring a great essay from George Hocutt.
