The legendary folk/rock superstars Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers set the music world on fire back in the sixties, with a very successful run of smash hit singles, chart-topping albums that continues to have a major impact on the music-buying public six decades after their first number of releases.
With a incredible array of songs and styles, Peter, Paul & Mary were just what the public wanted and all the pieces fit for a very long time, with a run of hits like "If I Had a Hammer," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Puff the Magic Dragon," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Day Is Done," and "Blowing in the Wind."
While paving the way for a multitude of then-unknown songwriters, the celebrated trio would go on to record powerful songs, like Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice," Gordon Lightfoot's "For Lovin' Me" and of course John Denver's surprise 1969 hit "Leaving on a Jet Plane." The hits and influences were endless, a very special time in popular music for sure.
They were all the rage, they were on all the major variety shows like The Andy Williams Show, The Smothers Brothers and The Jack Benny Program. They were featured in movies, television and in all the leading magazines, journals and teen and rock periodicals of the time.
For over five decades, Peter, Paul & Mary were an active force both musically and politically and were seen as a beacon of light during the Vietnam War with their superior songs and, of course, the voice of the stunning Mary Travers on songs like "The Cruel War," "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and her own brilliant smash hit "Follow Me."
Peter Yarrow was a tremendous musician and could sing like a champion, and he proved it over the decades with his great compositions like "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "The Great Mandella" of which The Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston recently noted, "I would like a 'do over' and become Peter Yarrow, and be the person who composed and performed the greatest anti-war song ever which is "The Great Mandella."
Noel Paul Stookey has gone on to compose and sing some of the most important recordings of our time, including his own universal solo hit "The Wedding Song," plus he rocked with the best of them with their huge hit "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," as well as his intriguing folk style of tracks like "Early in the Morning."
In the early 2000s, Warner Records released the superlative The Very Best of Peter, Paul & Mary on CD, the format of the day. It has never been offered on vinyl until now with this first-time-ever double vinyl release, mastered by Joe Reagoso with Noel Paul Stookey from the original Warner Music tapes.
This Friday Music reissue is pressed on colored vinyl and housed with a gatefold cover, which includes rare photos, album cover discography, plus first-time-ever liner notes from the likes of Chris Hillman from The Byrds, Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys, Danny O'Keefe, Jackie DeShannon, Joe Reagoso and Paul Stookey himself.
