Roy Ayers' 1972 Album He's Coming on LP: A Defining Album That Bridges Spiritual Jazz, Soul, and Hip-Hop Legacy.
Roy Ayers’ iconic album He’s Coming presents the jazz-funk-soul vibraphone master at the top of his game. Inspired by the Broadway musical Jesus Christ Superstar - including a cover of one of its songs - this spiritual and socially conscious LP features a powerful lineup including saxophonist Sonny Fortune, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Cobham, alongside Ayers’ core Ubiquity band.
Among the highlights are the funk anthem “He’s a Superstar” (sampled by Ghostface Killah), the atmospheric “We Live in Brooklyn, Baby” (sampled by Kendrick Lamar and Mos Def), and the classic “Ain’t Got Time” (sampled by J Dilla for Black Star’s “Little Brother”). A defining album that bridges spiritual jazz, soul, and hip-hop legacy.
