The High Spirits - I Believe (Vinyl LP)

The High Spirits' Compilation Album I Believe on LP: Cut by Kevin Gray.

‘60s teen mayhem that poured the foundation of Twin Cities Punk!

Their first ever LP?!? All their coveted singles plus 10 additional cuts from the vaults that make their debut here! A keystone to Twin City music culture, driving the garage scene and now you can witness their mind-bending journey into psych! Includes lost takes on cuts from The Who, Sam Cooke, Beau Brummels, and more! Influential? Not just to Minny rockers, hell, three of them were among the earliest to hold the purple reigns! Includes an extensive liner note insert.

During their relatively brief run, The High Spirits opened for legends like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, cut a real-deal radio hit with a mononucleosis-stricken singer, toured the Midwest relentlessly, almost got killed by a gang of jealous boyfriends, got arrested for a food fight, shot down the power lines at a gig, and got a master class in the magical powers of rock ‘n’ roll along the way.

The quartet of unreleased originals offer extended glimpses of the band’s creativity hardly hinted at before. "She's Got Soul" shows off their pop chops, complete with sha-la-la harmony chorus. The others underscore the Spirits’ contributions to the region’s budding freak scene. “Grooving with the Stone Fox” and “Sun Dance” both seem to bear a hint of Hendrix, complete with lacerating fuzz guitar and syncopated grooves. And “Alien Song” comes off like “Sunshine Superman”-era Donovan, turning the trippiness up to 11 via respected St. Louis Park bandleader Leo Fine’s wild trumpet, a dollop of dizzying psych-out guitar, and a set of sci-fi lyrics.
