Wolfgang Dauner Quintet - The Oimels (180g Vinyl LP)
Full Details
Wolfgang Dauner Quintet's The Oimels on (AAA) 180g LP from MPS Records.
The Oimels is a colorful, unconventional album that aligns more with the psychedelic pop-rock spirit of the late sixties than with the jazz scene of its era. It unites three remarkable European musicians: Wolfgang Dauner (piano, organ, vocals) offers his distinctive blend of jazz, classical, rock and avant-garde ideas. Eberhard Weber (bass, cello, vocals) contributes his unmistakable tone long before earning widespread international recognition. Sigi Schwab (guitar, sitar) rounds out the trio with a broad musical reach that includes major collaborations and numerous own projects. They are joined by Pierre Cavalli (guitar) and Roland Wittlich (drums, vocals).
The album opens with "Oh Baby I Don't Love You Anymore," which starts as a classic honky-tonk blues before distorted guitars push it into a sharper, modern edge. "Take Off Your Clothes to Feel the Setting Sun" reflects clear Beatles influences through its sitar and layered vocals, while Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now" appears in a fresh Latin-rock interpretation. "Come On in On In" shifts from electrified cello to an indie country rock groove and eventually erupts into a wild, chaotic finale. The Oimels stands as a compact, inventive and engaging snapshot of sixties experimentation that still feels surprisingly contemporary.
