Resolved, Redoubtable, Refined: KEF R3 Meta Bookshelf Loudspeakers Get the Details Right, Feature Uni-Q Driver Array with MAT

Distinguished due to its insigthful, pure, and natural performance, the KEF R3 Meta bookshelf loudspeakers handle delicate details just as well as it delivers dramatic punches. Leveraging cutting-edge technology from KEF's critically acclaimed Reference series, R3 Meta touts balanced frequency integration that makes it a sublime pick for music and movies. Don't let its convenient albeit compact 16.6 x 7.9 x 13.2-inch (HWD, with terminal) footprint fool you. This pair will constantly surprise you with high-definition soundstages that help turn films into immersive, three-dimensional events. Graced with color-toned grilles that never interfere with the speaker's sonics, R3 Meta merges stellar performance, great value, and eye-catching style. (Please note: R3 Meta does not come with speaker stands.)

Complemented by Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) that eliminates 99% of the unwanted noise from the rear of the driver, the 12th generation of KEF's renowned Uni-Q driver – which in R3 Meta bundles a one-inch vented aluminum-dome tweeter with a five-inch aluminum-cone midrange, the very same full-range design found in the R Meta Series flagship R11 floorstander – anchors this 27.3-pound all-rounder. The revised Uni-Q boasts a redesigned midrange motor system designed with KEF's in-house simulation and analysis tools. Featuring a shaped and undercut pole as well as symmetrical aluminum demodulation rings that combine to reduce the inductance in the lower midrange, the assembly lessens distortion and enhances imaging.

Equally effective, R3 Meta's Shadow Flare – a forward-thinking manner of diminishing cabinet diffraction – visually functions as a trim ring while serving double duty as a surface that extends the Uni-Q waveguide effect. In R3 Meta, the tweeter no longer has line of sight of the cabinet edges, thereby creating a shadow region at the points where the potential for diffraction remains highest, and minimizing the acoustic impact to negligible levels. In short: The Shadow Flare greatly assists the reproduction of subtle cues and nuances in your favorite recordings.

When it comes to the low end, R3 Meta possesses the authority you might expect from a tower. Its 6.5-inch driver with redesigned magnet system provides deep, taut, punchy, and soulful low bass. The woofer is built using a two-part structure, whereby a shallow concave aluminum skin sits atop a paper cone. The stiffness – combined with the cone's unique geometry – reduces additional resonances and delivers pistonic movement that accounts for superb timing. And let's not forget the flexible port. Molded via computational fluid dynamics, the flare and profile of the port is calculated to delay the onset of turbulence all while preventing longitudinal resonances from coloring the midrange.

KEF took extra measures to ensure the luxurious cabinetry adheres to acoustic principles that put the spotlight on fidelity. Constrained Layer Damping bracing (in which the internal braces are joined to the panels by a lossy interface) helps dissipate unwanted vibrations. In addition, a revised bracing layout furthers the creation of an inert platform that allows the drivers to operate at an optimal level. From top to bottom, inside and out, R3 Meta proves the Rs – resolved, ravishing, refined, redoubtable – have it.

"A feeling of precision is the most obvious first impression of the R3, with clear, focused soundstaging and excellent resolution of voices and instruments alike. But all this is underpinned with bass that's both weighty and well-controlled, with no sense of lack of extension and not a hint of overwrought upper bass being employed to hide any deficiencies lower down."
– James Parker, Hi-Fi News, Outstanding Product review

"The R3s are brilliant all-rounders. They're expertly sonically balanced and work well across a wide range of systems, but give them a top-class feed and they will deliver a sound good enough to worry most standmounters below the two grand mark. This is one to buy with confidence."
What Hi-Fi?, five-star review

“The R3 Meta sounds right and natural. The naturalness extends into the mids, giving an overall brilliant package.”

MAT: Breakthrough Sound Absorption
Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a revolutionary innovation that takes the performance of the 12th generation Uni-Q driver array to another level in terms of accuracy and clarity, is a hallmark of the R Meta Series. MAT is a highly complex maze-like structure, where each of the intricate channels efficiently absorbs a specific frequency. When combined, the channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound that comes from the rear of the tweeter, eliminating the resulting distortion and providing a purer, more natural acoustic performance.
