Video Review: JBL's L100 75th Anniversary Edition Speaker
By Bes Nievera

What's in a name? Well, if its James Bullough Lansing, probably not much, but when you look at his initials – J B L – they convey the name of one of the most iconic brands in the audiophile world. And, as the company JBL marks its 75th anniversary, Lansing's legacy – and the company's commitment to superior sound – are being celebrated with the launch of its L100 Classic 75 loudspeaker, now at Music Direct.

Limited to just 750 pairs worldwide, each L100 Classic 75 bears more than just the distinctive look of its iconic predecessor. That's because it has been improved and fully vetted for a sound that far exceeds the performance of what was already one of the world's most revered loudspeakers.

For this L100 to become a reality, Principal Engineer Chris Hagen went back to the drawing board to advance the L100 Classic 75's sonic message with improvements inside and out. Starting with its standout Bass Driver, the L100 Classic 75 delivers an increase in low frequencies, thanks to the inclusion of a dual-spider suspension. This approach lowers bass distortion through the combination of outward motion of the voice coil from the motor gap and an inward voice-coil motion. One listen will reveal bass tones that have made the name JBL legendary.

The L100 Classic 75's upgraded crossover results in accurate reproduction of the finest details while simultaneously reducing crosstalk. The midrange and high frequency drivers get an upgrade, too, and the dual binding posts and user adjustable high- and mid-frequency controls give the L100 Classic 75 that extra edge. This powerful pair can deliver massive gains in musicality in almost any environment.

And for that final finish, each L100 Classic 75 is housed in a beautiful teak veneer cabinet with black Quadrex grille and includes a pair of JS-120 stands to round out its mid-century vibe, all shipped in an exclusive wooden crate featuring 75th anniversary artwork.

Along with these technical improvements and aesthetic upgrades, JBL's L100 Classic 75 is also subjected to rigorous individual-product testing. Every pair is carefully scrutinized by a focused team of quality engineers to ensure that they perform to spec before, during, and after they're built. These matched pairs are badged with engraved rear plates, and the certificate of authenticity includes Hagan's signature, as well as the sequential serial numbers of the 750-pair production run. This provenance further enhances their significance as a collectible, one-of-a-kind speaker for the ages.

In short, the L100 Classic 75 is a must-have for audiophiles seeking a visually stunning speaker with the unmistakable JBL sound!
